Vision Systems Technician

McCain Foods USA has an immediate opening for a Vision Systems Technician in our Othello, Washington Facility. Under the direction of the Vision Systems Supervisor, the successful applicant will become part of the Engineering and Maintenance Team that provides the highest level of equipment reliability to sustain a large potato processing operation, and will both maintain and support the operation of robotics and optical sorting equipment. This position is well suited for a results-oriented team player, requiring minimal supervision of daily work activities, excellent communication skills and strong problem solving abilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Promotes and adheres to company safety policies.
  • Daily assessment of machine operations
    • Check the status of each machine
      • Evaluate the machine health
      • Determine if the settings are correct for the product being processed
  • Review the operator s log for each machine and ensure that operators are using the log.
  • Discuss machine operations with all operators
  • Discuss product defect status with quality control staff
  • Discuss product plans (skin-on, etc.) with production staff
  • Periodic (quarterly or as requested) machine performance testing and adjustment
    • Test the machines regularly to measure the sorting or defect removal performance and to proactively identify problems and associated required actions
    • Maintain and update the written testing procedures, and teach other operators how to test the machines
  • Plan & Schedule routine machine maintenance
    • Discuss machine maintenance needs with the maintenance staff (for electrical and mechanical support)
    • Develop PM plans for each piece of equipment
  • Respond quickly when machine problems develop
    • Maintain radio contact while on site
    • Answer calls at home
    • May be called in after-hours
  • Determine what spare parts should be kept in stock
  • Determine what tools are needed to effectively maintain and repair the machines
  • Document all frequently-used procedures and tasks (to be used as reference material and during training)
  • Provide training to electronic sorting operators so they properly operate and maintain the machines
  • Provide training to electrical technicians so they can handle machine problems in your absence
  • Plan for the future
    • Provide input to the capital project planning regarding major repairs or upgrades or machine replacement
    • Stay aware of new machines and technologies that could improve electronic sorting
  • Able to effectively coordinate the activities of others in a respectful and courteous manner
  • Communicates problems or changes in production or quality to supervisor
  • Understands and adheres to the concept and techniques of the quality process in order to assure a quality operation
  • Promotes and adheres to company safety regulations
  • Follows appropriate Lockout procedures at all times
  • Keeps work areas clean and orderly in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Helps to build a Teamwork environment in each individual work group, the Factory, and the Company
  • May be required to participate in a continuous improvement process, such as an Employee Involvement or Focus Improvement Team

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY

  • Responsibility to monitor work areas, watch for suspicious behavior and report any concerns regarding unidentified visitors and/or unauthorized personnel.
  • Authority to question and take appropriate measures regarding the safety of yourself, other employees, products, and equipment.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high standard of cleanliness throughout the food processing facility, especially where any raw or finished product is produced
  • Authority to report and/or eliminate hazards to the safety of the food that is produced in the facility.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

One - two year certificate from college or technical school; or six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a good range of knowledge, electrical and mechanical skill set required. Ability to utilize a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System). SAP experience preferred. Previous experience in an electronics position is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees of the organization. Required repair parts are on site in a timely manner and for the accurate data collection of all maintenance actions.
  • Possesses good communication skills to report to the supervisor and communicate appropriately with others, including those involved in on-the-job training functions.
  • Develops the habit and practice of documentation of work that may result in changes to parameters, circuits, components, configuration, or orientation of an electrical/electronic device for future reference by self and others.
  • Operates the forklift and scissor-lift as needed.
  • Communicates with supervisors, operators, and maintenance mechanics to determine deficiency in equipment operation.
  • Communicates corrective actions to supervisors, operators, and maintenance personnel.
  • Communicates any problems or changes in working environment to appropriate personnel.
  • Understands and adheres to the concepts and techniques of the quality process in order to ensure a quality operation.
  • Keeps work area clean and orderly in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP s) and according to the principles of 5S.
  • Performs assigned tasks in a manner that does not endanger the environment and adheres to company and regulatory standards.
  • Actively participates in the continuous improvement process, such as MCE events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Keeps area clean and orderly in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP s).
  • Participates in continuous improvement process.

REQUIRED
Qualifications:

Completion of one year toward an Associate s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or one or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong computer background including PC hardware, experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Windows

Must possess a general knowledge of Local Area Network; ability to read and understand schematics, utilize PC and PLC for diagnostics and troubleshooting; have experience with AC/DC voltages ranging from 5 to 480 volts; have experience with electrical wiring in accordance with the National Electric Code; experience with Instrumentation, motor and process controls (Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems); and experience with repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment

PREFERRED:

  • Advanced Electronics Aptitude
  • Hand tool experience.
  • Machine Shop Knowledge Helpful.
  • Advanced Computer Skills (Word, Excel, CMMS, and Rockwell Software).
  • Working knowledge of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) such as SAP, is desired
  • Advanced Problem-Solving Skills.
  • Understanding of National Electric Code.
